In the midst of our busy, modern lives, finding balance can feel unrealistic. We have so many obligations to juggle and often feel the need to ‘do it all’, leading to burnout.

In this cycle, our physical, mental, and emotional health can suffer. However, life doesn’t have to feel so hectic. Read on for some tips for maintaining a healthy work-life balance!

  1. Communicate at Work

Setting boundaries is easier said than done. Everybody has different hours, responsibilities, and projects to work on. However, communication is key here– if you feel like you’re in charge of an inordinate amount of work, consider asking your supervisor if the work can be spread out over time or over more people.

If you’re working an unsteady or exhausting number of hours, explore how you can work a steady and realistic schedule to maintain boundaries (Mental Health America).

  1. Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

Whether at work or at home, scheduling things out can make you feel like you have more time and energy when life gets overwhelming. At work, this can include making monthly, weekly, and daily schedules of tasks that need to be done.

This allows you to prioritize, not be as rushed, and feel more on top of things. At home, it can allow you to create a time budget, cut out tasks that aren’t as important, and focus on enjoying the things you want to enjoy without worrying so much about everything else floating around in your brain (Mental Health America).

  1. Self-Care

When we’re busy, self-care can often go to the wayside. However, if we’re not taking care of ourselves, the other areas of our lives can suffer.

More than that, you’re worth taking care of! Self-care includes supporting your mental and physical health by exercising, pursuing healthy eating habits, going to bed about the same time every day and for enough hours, unplugging from technology, and having social connections with others (BetterUp).

  1. Reach Out

We aren’t meant to navigate life alone. We all need support from those around us, and one great way to receive support is from your doctor and/or counselor. Your Primary Care Provider can support your health, provide education, and provide any referrals you might need.

Your Mental Health Counselor can help you work through burnout, form a game-plan for handling overwhelm and busyness, and support you through other mental and emotional challenges you are facing (BetterUp).
