What Is Pediatric Speech Therapy?

In its simplest terms, speech therapy can be defined as, “the assessment and treatment

of communication problems and speech disorders. It is performed by speech-language

pathologists (SLPs), which are often referred to as speech therapists.” (Healthline).

Pediatric Speech Therapy is a service offered at Compass Community Health, and is

beneficial to children within a wide variety of diagnoses or speech struggles such as stuttering,

difficulty with social communication, apraxia, receptive or expressive language disorders, autism spectrum disorder, or other speech and communication disorders.

At Compass, there are many facets to speech that your Speech Language Pathologist may hone in on, such as phonology, functional language, social communication, fluency, coordination and

strength of speech muscles, understanding, and more!

According to Healthline, Pediatric Speech Therapy may include techniques such as

playing, using books and pictures, and other tools to encourage language development. They

will also engage in modelling correct speech and language use, and providing help for the family

to conduct continued speech therapy at home.

It is important to start speech therapy as early in a child’s life as possible, as this gives

the child the highest success rate when also paired with being practiced at home, according to

this study by the National Library of Medecine. If you are on the fence about starting speech

therapy for your child, do not delay! It may make a big difference for them. Schedule an

appointment by calling the number below!

A service that is strongly tied to Pediatric Speech Therapy is Compass’ Pediatric

Occupational Therapy. They can help with communication skills as well as motor skills, self-help

skills, cognitive, emotional, and social skills, and much more, to help your child live the most

independent and thriving life possible. Read our blog to learn more about Pediatric Occupational Therapy.
