Have you heard the saying, “You can’t give from an empty cup?” It refers to the importance of taking care of ourselves and how that acts as the basis for giving of ourselves to our obligations, loved ones, etc. As women, it can be so easy to give, give, give until we burn ourselves out and are struggling physically and mentally, but there’s a healthier way! Read on for some self-care strategies to prioritize your well-being.
Self-Care: What It Is & Why It Matters
When talking about self-care, it’s important to be clear about what we’re talking about! Some people may think of things like bubble baths and iced coffees, which are good in their own way, but self-care is more than treats. Self-care starts with self-respect, and recognizing that you are important and worthy of being cared for. Self-care is considering and choosing that which supports your needs and overall wellbeing in just about every arena of life! Self-care is that which nourishes and uplifts you, allowing you to live your daily life in a present, healthy way.
When we aren’t nourishing ourselves physically and mentally, we burn out. Our minds and bodies can only healthily tolerate so much stress. Chronic stress can cause a myriad of physical and mental health issues, including but not limited to depression, sleep issues, lowered immunity leading to more colds, blood pressure issues, IBS, heart disease, and diabetes (Cleveland Clinic). Neglecting self-care can turn the ups and downs of everyday life into a life that feels burdensome, painful, and lacking meaning.
Self-Care: Physical and Mental
Physical and mental self-care often tie in together. For example, exercise and nutrition, while seeming like just physical self-care on the surface, actually go a long way in supporting your mental wellness as well! According to the American Psychological Association, “Studies have shown that women who exercise regularly, eat right, get sufficient sleep and find satisfaction in their work and personal lives have less depression, anxiety, and illnesses, such as heart disease.”
As mentioned above, self-care also includes practicing good sleep hygiene, such as not staring at screens right before bed and trying to sleep and wake at similar times everyday. Working towards having healthy relationships, both with others and yourself, is so important for your wellbeing. Try to engage in work or hobbies that are meaningful to you, and see if you can include your loved ones!
Self-care doesn’t have to be complex, confusing, or too creative. Ask yourself– If I were a really healthy person, what would I do more of? What would I do less of? Oftentimes we know what’s beneficial for us or not, and working towards making foundational habits of the basics is what is really important!
Self-Care: Seeking Support
We aren’t meant to navigate life alone. An important aspect of self-care is having a strong support network, and support from a professional can go a long way! Whether it’s a primary care provider or a mental health counselor, they are there to walk alongside you on your health and wellbeing journey!
